A planning application for a large hotel in west Greenwich has been backed by Greenwich Council.
The Council’s Planning Board last week gave planning consent for Maurice Drummond House in Catherine Grove to be converted into a hotel.
The eight storey building was originally built in the 1930s as accommodation for officers from the Metropolitan Police.
The new hotel will be called “The Greenwich” and will offer a “boutique” experience in its 168 rooms, according to documents submitted with the planning application.
The former section house received RIBA’s London Architectural Medal in 1946. The company behind the scheme is Periquin Limited, the sole director of which is Lady Rona Delves Broughton.
Greenwich Hospital recently won the the right to build a boutique hotel at Greenwich Market and another is planned within the Movement development at the corner of Norman Road and Greenwich High Road.
Daren Clarke says
Along with the Travelodge planned for Charlton and the ‘other’ boutique hotel on Tunnel Avenue…….Are they all going to be viable after next summer?

Positive -About time they did something with this building as it has stood there unused and derelict for quite a while.
Negative – Isn’t this the building that has a serious issue with asbestos?
Assuming it is then it’s going to cost a lot to get rid of it, with which
those costs surely will be passed on to those that stay there.
Jim says
All companies taking over buildings for redevelopment have to pay for and get rid of asbestos safely under the law, at their own cost, no one elses!
The cost of the hotel will reflect the type of clients they are looking for, bearing in minsdit is not in central Greenwich, and if they want to survive, they have to price accordingly and promote accordingly!
The asbestos cost will not be part of any company idea in terms of room cost.
JB says
Jim, think you will find the costs of asbestos are either passed on to the existing owner, or knocked off the price of the building. The Met will be paying for it one way or another.
