Greenwich will once again play host to a farmers’ market as of next month.
City & Country Farmers’ Markets are returning to Greenwich in October with a new location right in the heart of the town centre.
The traders will set up their stalls in Durnford Street, between Greenwich Market and Greenwich Church Street.
The announcement was made on City & Country Farmers’ Markets’ Facebook page.
The organisers commented:
“We looked at various venues and found nothing suitable – but then Greenwich Market contacts us and offered us … the location! We were initally a little uncertain as central Greenwich is a touristy area, however we have a great deal of support from locals as well as a prime location so are very confident it will work.”
Previous attempts to launch the market at East Greenwich Pleasaunce and at Halstow School proved to be unsuccessful.
Lara Ruffle from East Greenwich regularly attended the market at Halstow School and welcomes the news:
“I am very pleased to see that CCFM are returning to Greenwich. We are lacking in a farmers’ market and I was disappointed when the Halstow School site didn’t work out. Hopefully this fabulous central location will mean the market is here to stay
The new farmers’ market in Durnford Street begins on the weekend of October 15th and 16th.

I am non-plussed about this one. I feel that although Halstow School was too far out, to now go into central Greenwich – right next to the existing market – will mean this is simply be seen as an extension to the original.
As a local I don’t want to dice with tyre kicking tourists. I want to get in, have a quick chat with stall holders, buy some regular produce and then get out with minimum hassle.
I cannot help but think a site like the Meridian Primary School or one of the easterly car parks in the Naval College would have been a far better option. And living near that area will mean I’ll just keeping going to see Joris at L’Artisan, the great French Deli on Trafalgar Road.

it’s a shame the University of Greenwich didn’t incorporate an open space in their new so called School of Architecture (Stockwell Street) for activities such as the farmer’s market. It would have been a good opportunity to give something real back to the community instead of another boring coffee shop.

Conducted a search for Durnford Street SE10 via numerous sites. Yahoo! and Street Maps located numerous locations ie for Durnford Street N7 but not the SE10 address. Bing has it but spelt as ‘Dunford’ (http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/4605/dunford.jpg). Google Maps associates it with Greenwich Clocktower Market (?!) but on closer inspection appears to believe that it doesn’t actually exist (http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/8128/durnfordstreetwhere.jpg).
In short not a good location to be looking for on the web.

Durnford Street itself could not possibly hold a farmers market. What with the flower shop and the artist’s quarter there is only space for about ten stalls. I suspect space will be found in the car park area, currently used on the weekends for traders’ parking.

@GeoffNeilly a community space for things like the Farmers Market within the new school of Architecture would be a great idea.
It might even generate them some revenue which is apparently much needed with overseas admissions being down, mass students being failed and teachers being laid off.
As a local it is concerning, can no-one in authority confirm this or is it a case of omerta?
